Honoring Top Inspirational Speaker And Author Dale Carnegie

By John Beede

Among the grandfathers of the motivational speaking industry is Dale Carnegie. Dale Carnegie was born in a low-income family from a modest farm in Maryville, Missouri. Early on in his teenage years, he showed wonderful potential as he aggressively participated in debate team throughout high school. He managed to finish college through his diligence at State Teacher's College in Warrensburg and subsequently got his first job as a salesman for Armour and Company in Nebraska which he successfully adopted as his sales territory.

Carnegie's all-time dream was to be a Chautauqua lecturer, so he enthusiastically saved 500 and quit his job to be able to pursue this dream. But he ended up going to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in NYC. Learning that success in acting was elusive, he returned to New York and lived at the 125th St. YMCA. That was when the concept of teaching public speaking came to his mind. He accepted a job as a instructor at the YMCA and discovered that the pupils believed they were a lot more positive to speak to their public audiences after asking them let most of their natural ideas and feelings come out.

Shortly after, he began to build public speaking programs on his own. In 1926, he launched his first collection of publications entitled Public Speaking: A Practical Course for Businessmen, which was renamed in 1932 as Public Speaking and Influencing Men in Business. Among other books he wrote were How to Stop Worrying and Start Living and Lincoln the Unknown.

His best known book is titled, How to Win Friends and Influence People, which found it's permanent mark in the minds of his readers. In 1936, his book sold 10 million copies in different language translations, setting a record of being one of the best-selling books of all time.

Simply because his book grew to become a global hit, his demands and job offers increased as a author and lecturer. He started a news column and established the Dale Carnegie Institute for Effective Speaking and Human Relations which branched out across the world. His courses were well recognized globally for becoming efficient in self-improvement, public speaking, better salesmanship, corporate training, and interpersonal skills.

Carnegie's passion has often been instructing other folks how to reach success through the publications he writes and speeches he delivers. He wanted us to identify our genuine individual, to have a distinctive style in public speaking, and win over the crowd, persuading them to take action. Techniques for doing so are integrated in the method of public speaking he created - the "Stand and Deliver" method.

All his endeavours paid off, as lots of people thanked him for offering them guidance that made them climb the ladder of success in business and even in real life. Carnegie died on November 1, 1955 due to Hodgkin's disease, yet his influence even now continues until this age. It's been established in fact that the reputation of his publications has increased by 5 million copies in 31 various languages and the institute he established has had 450,000 graduates after his death.
